What kind of camera are you buying?
The shape can mislead. First decide which family the camera belongs to, because a failed built-in lens is a different proposition from one you can remove.
Compact / pocket
The lens is normally part of the camera and retracts when switched off. Test startup, shutdown and zoom repeatedly: a dead lens mechanism can make the whole camera uneconomical. Tiny doors, switches, proprietary batteries and older card formats deserve attention too.
DSLR
What does DSLR mean?
A camera with interchangeable lenses and a mirror that sends light to an optical viewfinder. Judge the lens and body separately; the mirror, shutter, focus system and lens mount all matter.

Mirrorless
The lens comes off and the sensor sits more directly exposed during lens changes. Check the mount, sensor, electronic viewfinder, battery and any in-body stabilization. Mechanical and electronic shutter behaviour varies by model.
Bridge
It may resemble a DSLR, but the long zoom lens is built in. That integrated zoom mechanism is a major failure point. Test it across its full range, along with stabilization, electronic viewfinder, battery and storage.

In person or remote?
In person
Power-cycle mechanisms repeatedly. Inspect corrosion and shine angled light through the lens. With permission, use your own compatible card, make files and listen for scraping, grinding or intermittent faults.
Remote
Ask for recent full-resolution samples from that exact camera, plus clear photographs of the battery compartment, card slot and lens. Save the listing, read condition wording literally, check seller history and understand the return protection. Assume “untested” means untested.
Body
Use bright, angled light. Cosmetic wear can be harmless. Impact damage, corrosion and bad repairs matter more.
- Look along corners, grip edges, strap lugs and the area around the lens mount for cracks, dents, gaps or impact marks.
- Check screw heads. Heavily marked, mismatched or missing screws suggest somebody has been inside; ask why.
- Open the battery and card doors. Hinges, springs, latches and rubber seals should be present and close securely.
- Inspect the tripod socket. It should be firmly seated, not cross-threaded, loose or pushed into the body.
- Check battery contacts, card slot, flash contacts and metal seams for green, white or rusty corrosion. Do not power a camera with serious corrosion.
Lens
Use a flashlight from an angle. A little internal dust is often harmless. Fungus, haze, separation and mechanical faults deserve much more suspicion.
- Inspect front and rear glass for scratches, chips, coating damage, cleaning marks and oily smears.
- Shine light through from several angles. Branching or web-like growth suggests fungus; an overall mist suggests haze.
What does lens fungus mean?
Fungal growth inside a lens often looks like fine branches or a web. It can reduce contrast, damage coatings and spread, so it is more concerning than a few dust specks.

What does lens separation mean?
The adhesive between joined glass elements is failing. It may affect contrast and is rarely a simple cleaning job.
Learn more → - Turn zoom and focus rings through their full travel. Feel for grinding, sticking, uneven resistance, excess play or a barrel that droops.
- Power-cycle a compact several times. A retracting lens that hesitates, clicks, scrapes or needs a second attempt is not “just old”.
- Photograph a detailed, flat scene and compare both sides of the image. If one side stays noticeably softer, the lens may be decentered.
What does a decentered lens mean?
One or more lens elements are out of alignment. A common symptom is one side of every photograph remaining much softer than the other.

Sensor and image files
The sensor is the light-sensitive chip that records the photograph—the digital equivalent of film. Inspect saved photographs on a larger screen; the camera display can hide dust, bad focus and corruption.
Why does the sensor matter?
Damage or dirt on the sensor can appear in every image, regardless of what the rear screen seems to show.
Learn more →- Photograph a plain wall or clear sky at a smaller aperture, for example f/8 instead of f/2.8. This is called stopping down. Dark marks that become sharper are often sensor dust.
Aperture and stopping down
Aperture is the adjustable opening inside a lens. Stopping down means using a smaller opening and higher f-number, which makes sensor dust easier to see.
Learn more → - With the lens covered, use a moderately long exposure at several sensitivity settings. Look for persistent bright pixels or fixed lines, not the random grain expected at high ISO.
- Photograph a detailed subject in good light. Check the full-size file for bands, partial frames, severe colour blocks or corruption.
- Take several consecutive photographs and confirm each writes, previews and transfers correctly. Intermittent corruption is a serious warning.
Autofocus
Autofocus (AF)—the camera and lens making the chosen subject sharp—should work repeatedly, not merely once.
What does autofocus mean?
The camera and lens move glass elements to focus. While buying, repeated accurate focus matters more than one lucky result.
Learn more →- Focus on a nearby detailed subject, then a distant one. Repeat so the lens must travel each time.
- Try the centre focusing area first, then a few off-centre areas if selectable. Use clear targets in adequate light.
- Listen for grinding, squealing or abrupt stalls. Some older systems are noisy, but repeated failure or long hunting in good light is a warning.
- Inspect the files at full size to confirm the intended subject is sharp. With interchangeable lenses, the fault may belong to the body, lens or combination.
Stabilization
Stabilization counters hand movement. It may be inside the lens, inside the body—called IBIS—or absent.
What does IBIS mean?
In-body image stabilization moves the camera’s sensor to counter hand shake. Errors, violent rattling or consistently worse results when enabled can indicate a fault.
Learn more →- Enable it and half-press the shutter while viewing a magnified or zoomed-in scene. The view may settle slightly; compare with it disabled if possible.
- Take several handheld photographs at a moderately slow shutter speed with stabilization on and off. Look for consistent improvement, not perfection.
- A faint hum or brief movement can be normal. Violent rattling, grinding, repeated clicking or an error message is not.
Controls
Exercise every physical control more than once. Intermittent input faults hide during a quick power-on.
- Press playback, menu, delete, directional and function buttons you will use.
- Rotate each command wheel slowly in both directions. Watch for skipped values, reverse jumps or multiple changes from one click.
- Move mode and exposure dials through every position and confirm the displayed setting follows.
- Test both shutter-button stages: half-press for focusing, full press for the photograph. It should not stick or fire early.
- For touchscreens, test the centre, edges, corners, gestures and any control needed to operate the camera.
Display and viewfinder
View a bright image, a dark image, menus and a live scene through every display.
- Check the rear screen for cracks, pressure marks, flicker, uneven brightness, missing rows or columns, and stuck pixels.
- Look for yellowing, cloudy patches, coating damage or layers lifting at the edges.
- If fitted, test the EVF—the small screen you look through—and the eyesight-adjustment wheel beside it, called the dioptre. Trigger automatic switching repeatedly.
What does EVF mean?
Electronic viewfinder. Check it for flicker, dead areas and unreliable eye-sensor switching.
Learn more → - Tilt or swivel the screen through its full range while on. Dropouts can reveal a worn internal ribbon cable.
Flash
A flash that pops up is not necessarily a flash that works.
- Raise or enable it and take a photograph. Confirm visible output in the saved image.
- Fire it several times, allowing it to recharge. Watch for very long charge times, weak output, errors or failure after the first shot.
- Inspect the flash window, hinge, latch and external-flash contacts. Never touch exposed components in damaged flash equipment.
Battery
A fresh replacement battery may be worth more to you than a box full of original accessories.
- Remove the battery and record its exact model number. Do not search by camera model alone.
- Inspect every side on a flat surface. Reject a swollen, split, leaking, hot or badly corroded battery; never force it into the camera.
- Check for genuine or reputable third-party replacements in your region. Importing an obscure pack can erase the bargain.
- Ask how quickly it discharges in normal use. Treat a very old original battery as a test battery, not added value.
Chargers and cables
Confirm how the battery actually charges. A USB-shaped port does not guarantee in-camera charging.
- Identify whether the camera needs an external charger, dock, mains adapter or model-specific cable.
- Check included accessories against the manual and price missing essentials before buying.
- Inspect unusual USB and combined audio/video connectors. Some resemble standards but require a proprietary cable.
- If a charger is included, match its label to the battery and local mains input, then verify charging begins.
Memory cards
Old storage ranges from mildly awkward to surprisingly expensive. The familiar SD shape has several generations.
- Identify the exact format: SD, SDHC, SDXC, CompactFlash, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick or another proprietary type.
SD, SDHC and SDXC
These are generations of the same-shaped card with different capacity rules. An older camera may accept SD or SDHC but reject a modern SDXC card.

- With permission, insert a known-compatible card, format it in-camera, shoot several frames and review them.
- Inspect for damaged contacts, debris and poor latching. CompactFlash sockets need particular care because their fine internal pins can bend.
- Price both the card and a compatible reader. The camera may not transfer files over a modern standard cable.
Ports
Open each cover gently and inspect before connecting anything.
- Check the USB, HDMI, microphone, remote, power and analogue video ports the model provides.
- Look for bent internal tongues, pushed-in sockets, corrosion, compacted dirt and damaged pins.
- Confirm covers remain attached and close. Missing covers matter more on weather-resistant equipment.
- Test only the ports you expect to use, with the correct cables. Never force a connector that merely appears to fit.
Real-world test
Run a short version of how you would use the camera.
- Start and shut it down several times; note delays or errors.
- Photograph at the widest and longest zoom settings, or with more than one lens if relevant.
- Focus near, focus far and repeat.
- Fire the flash and let it recharge.
- Record and play a short video with sound if video matters to you.
- Zoom into photographs during playback, then copy the original files to another device.
- Inspect full-resolution files for focus, spots, lines and corruption. Check EXIF metadata when it helps verify the sample.
What is EXIF metadata?
Information saved inside an image file, such as camera model and exposure settings. It can support a seller’s claim, though it can be removed or edited.

If testing is refused: you are being asked to accept more risk. That can be rational at a parts-or-repair price, but it should change what you pay or whether you proceed.
Seller and price
Marketplace descriptions are not test reports. Read them literally.
- Review seller history and feedback, especially previous electronics sales and how problems were handled.
- Understand the return window, exclusions and return-shipping cost. Save the listing and condition description.
- “Untested”, “as-is”, “powers on” and “for parts” do not mean fully working. “Retro”, “CCD” and “digicam” describe a market, not condition.
- For remote purchases, ask for recent full-resolution files from the exact camera, preferably with metadata intact.
- Compare recent sold prices for the same model and similar condition. Asking prices are aspirations. Include lens, battery, charger, storage, reader, fees and return protection.
- A high shutter count is context, not an automatic death sentence. A low count is not proof of careful storage.
What does shutter count mean?
The number of shutter releases a camera reports. Not every model exposes it reliably, and a low number says nothing about corrosion, impact or bad storage.

Red flags: when to walk away
Serious corrosion, a swollen battery, repeated lens errors, intermittent file corruption, random shutdowns or major impact damage around the lens mount deserve a parts-or-repair price—if you want a repair project at all.
Also be wary when a seller claims full functionality but refuses reasonable basic testing, or when the price depends entirely on hype while condition is poor. Faults are not moral failures; they are pricing information. The cheaper the camera, the more risk may be rational.
