Today is a day for Sony announcements. After RX1 full frame compact, next in line are three new NEX lenses; a wide angle 10-18 f/4, callapsable 16-50 power zoom and a 35mm f/1.8 prime lens. With the latest additions, a popular NEX system has 13 lens options (together with wide and fisheye adapters for 16mm).
35mm f/1.8 lens is the one Ibeleive should have been produced at the very start of NEX system. On APS-C sensor it provides an equivalent viewing angle of 50mm lens which is regarded as a good starting point for every photographer, not to wide nor quite tele-lens; good for everything and perfect fot nothing. A bonus of this lens is optical stabilization which is probably main reason for its price of $ 450 – maybe to high for start, but I guess it will fall with time.
10-18mm f/4 wideangle zoom is also a welcomed addition to NEX lenses lineup. It has an viewing angle of 15-27 mm in 35 mm equivalent, constant aperture at f/4 and optical stabilization – quite unusual for a true wide angle lens. Untill now, only wide angle NEX lens option was using VCL-ECU1 wide angle adapter on 16mm pancake; cheap but optically not a perfect solution. New 10-18 is a bit wider than 18-55 kit lens, but not longer. It will be available by the end of the year fot the price of $ 850.
16-50 f/3.5-5.6 power zoom is only a second pancake NEX lens. It gives a 24-75 mm viewing angle equivalent. If it prooves to be optically good, this migjht be a hit because of its small dimensions when collapsed; it is just a bit bigger than 16mm pancake. It will be available in January 2013 for the price of $ 350.
