Samsung NX mini review

Previous pageNext page

Alltogether, NX mini feels like an amateur camera made mainly for those who seek small and stylish product wit image quality beeing only good enough. If you like NX mini, there’s no clear reason not to buy one, but for those who seek maximum usability and image quality for the price, there are better options.

Sony A5000 is a better camera in terms of image quality and features, Nikon D3200 is an excellent choice from DSLR world and Nikon P340 is better if you seek really small and light camera and all three of them cost the same or less than NX mini. If it has to be Samsung, NX2000 with large APS-C sensor is the one to buy – image quality is on a whole different level.

There are several problems I see with the NX mini: With the 9mm lens it is useless in low light and for video, with the 9-27mm is not that thin so it will not actually fit in a pocket as easy as a true compact camera would. 13 x 9 mm image sensor has a certain level of image quality (better than most compacts) but cannot compete with micro 4/3 or APS-C that cost the same so what’s the point? When you add (mostly) touch interface, the whole NX mini package feels like a cute but expensive toy camera.

  • Design
  • Tilt and touch LCD
  • Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity
  • Best battery life among all mirrorless cameras

  • Limited choice of average lenses
  • Small image sensor
  • Weird “reverse” image playback
  • Second flash unit is useless
  • Only average image quality
  • Micro SD memory cards

All images converted from RAW with settings “to taste”, except those with SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) designation so you can judge about the default desaturated colors I talked about

ISO 1600, F/3.5, 1/6

ISO 1600, F/4, 1/20

ISO 160, F/7.1, 1/160

ISO 160, F/7.1, 1/200, SOOC

ISO 160, F/9, 1/400

ISO 200, F/5.6, 1/100

ISO 160, F/7.1, 1/200, SOOC

ISO 160, F/9, 1/320

ISO 160, F/7.1, 1/250

  1. Hello,

First off thank you so much for the in depth review. it was very helpful. I was thinking of buying this camera for making videos (mostly vlogging), but I would like to ask if you know of other cameras of a similar price range or cheaper that offers more or better quality. I am interested in a flip screen camera such as this one. I have a DSLR for taking photos and making high quality videos but it is too heavy to carry around and difficult when I’m filming myself handheld. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
P.S: if you think this is a better otion, do I need to buy both lens or does the 9-27mm work just fine and how heavy is it? is it comfortable for vlogging with the camera facing me?
    Sorry for the long questions.

    Thank you :)

    • 9-27mm lens would be just fine. Video quality is quite good on NX mini, you should be fine with it for amateur vlogs. :)
