Nikon Coolpix P340 review

Previous pageNext page

Nikon Coolpix P340 is the latest model in the line of advanced compact cameras. As expected it has a full range of manual controls and customizations including the ability to shoot in RAW file format and was developed with image quality as it main selling point. Of course, you can use it in full AUTO mode what makes it ideal for amateur users in search of a small camera with higher than usual image quality. Since most of the compact camera market share was eaten away by smartphones, advanced cameras like P340 have become very affordable, but most of them untill recently were not capable of producing image quality that could compete with larger DSLR and mirrorless cameras with significantly bigger image sensors. Well, times change and P340 turned out to be good enough to rival some of the older DSLR’s. Keep reading to find out what is so good about this camera even got me thinking into buying one!

CONSTRUCTION AND HANDLING

Nikon P340 is really small and light, weighing just around 160g with a Li-Ion battery. Being only 29mm thick, it is possible to carry it anywhere in a pocket. P340 truly qualifies as a compact camera.

Build quality is good but not extraordinary. Nikon P340 is made from plastic and is tightly assembled, but the tactile feel of some of the buttons reveals there were some expense cuts during production. This is by no means bad thing, because it keeps the retail price low and does not reflect on the overall product quality.

Multi controller on the back has a well defined feedback when pressed or rotated. P340 has no less than three control rings (4 if you count mode dial). Their function can be reassigned to a certain degree, especially the one around the lens which can control up to 9 functions and behaves like a sort of a quick menu. The problem with it is once that you adjust step zoom, the main zoom rocker dial around the shutter buttons also starts to zoom in steps. It must be a bug of some kind.

Menu system is pretty straightforward and anyone who had a Nikon before will be immediately familiar with it. Sadly, menu does not remember last setting used but defaults at first item each time when called upon. Also, it is kind of slow to switch between main tabs (shooting menu, video, Wi-Fi, main settings).

  2. How wide is the angle in video mode compared to photo mode? Sometimes video is more narrow than photos, is this the case here?

  3. Nice review. You were saying that if the lens control ring was assign to step zoom, the zoom rocker around the shutter also zoom in step, rather than variable zoom?

    Thanks.

  4. Hi! Is there a difference if it is made in Japan or USA? I’ve found both options online, and don’t know which one to get.

    Thanks!

    • As far as I know, there is no difference, you should ask the seller, maybe they have information.
