Nikon Coolpix P340 review

Previous pageNext page

Nikon P340 has very few weak points in my opinion: terrible battery life and weird operation of front control dial.  Everything else is more or less perfect! The camera is small and light with good build quality and packed with advanced features, but most of all there is the image quality. There is very few cameras with a sensor this small that can deliver the amount of details and colors as this Nikon does. When properly post processed from RAW files, images can compete with several years old DSLR cameras. Last year’s Nikon P330 was really good camera, but this new P340 is a true gem. I even toyed with the idea of buying one for myself – this is how good it is, but my current bank balance would not tolerate another camera, so I’ll have to skip this one. If you seek really small camera with high image quality, this might be the best choice. Just be sure to get a spare battery.

Sony DSC-RX100/RX100M2/RX100M3 (read review): Sony offers even bigger sensor with higher image quality in similarly sized camera, but at twice the price of Nikon P340. If that’s not a problem go for Sony – it is better without a doubt, but it is questionable whether the IQ difference is worth doubling the expense.

Olympus XZ-2 (read review): XZ-2 offers better lens (aperture), tilt and touch LCD and faster auto focus with similar image quality but bigger in size. Originally it wasn’t what we could call affordable but currently it is on sale on Amazon with 50% discount what makes it a good alternative to P340.

Olympus XZ-10: more affordable than P340 but worse low-light capability and less features. I think you are better off with Nikon.

Canon Powershot S120 (read review): costs more and has worse image quality than Nikon. P340 is a clear choice here.

  2. How wide is the angle in video mode compared to photo mode? Sometimes video is more narrow than photos, is this the case here?

  3. Nice review. You were saying that if the lens control ring was assign to step zoom, the zoom rocker around the shutter also zoom in step, rather than variable zoom?

  4. Hi! Is there a difference if it is made in Japan or USA? I’ve found both options online, and don’t know which one to get.

    • As far as I know, there is no difference, you should ask the seller, maybe they have information.
