Nikon 1 AW1 review

Previous pageNext page

If you absolutely need waterproof camera for snorkeling or very often shoot in harshest conditions (water, extreme dust and humidity) Nikon 1 AW1 is the best there is. You can still buy normal camera and get special waterproof case but this ads a lot to the size and can be bothersome for use. Nikon AW1 makes life very easy: buy it – charge battery – go shooting. Image quality is good enough for most amateur users.

On the other side, if you mostly shoot in normal everyday conditions there is no real reason to buy AW1. There are mirrorless cameras with better image quality and easier control interface at lower prices. AW1 is currently twice more expensive than NEX-3N for example which is a better camera overall.

Having all that in mind, AW1 can be regarded as a niche product, perfect if you abuse your gear, but not enough attractive for everyday use.

  • Waterproof, drop-proof and freeze-proof
  • Fast AF
  • Build quality

  • Manual controls buried in menu system
  • Only two waterproof lenses offered
  • Too expensive for given image quality
  • Underwhelming video (only 30p and no image stabilization)
