Canon has announced plenty of new gear most of which is actually old gear. Confused? Don’t be, it quite normal these days for any consumer electronics company to release new product that is essentially the same as old one with just some minor upgrades. Canon PowerShot G16 and S120 are Canon’s latest premium compact cameras, with G16 having now WiFi connection and S120 got slightly faster lens.
Popular PowerShot SX500 got a better sensor and is now called SX510 HS and SX160 IS got a Li-Ion battery and is now called SX170 IS. There is also a new lens – Canon EF-S 55-250 F/4-5.6 IS STM which is essentially the same as the old 55-250 but now has a silent step motor auto focus (STM).

Canon PowerShot G16
Canon PowerShot G16 is latest in a decade long line of Canon G cameras. I reviewed the last one called G15 and liked it a lot so there should be no reason why the new Canon G16 shouldn’t be great camera; it uses the same 12 MP sensor and the identical lens. New is the image processor (DIGIC 6) and the added WiFi connectivity should please some potential buyers. Canon also claims 50% increase in AF speed and shutter lag.
Burst shooting also got upgraded; it can now shoot at 12.5 fps for the first 6 frames and then drops to equally fast 9.3 fps up to next 522 shots (according to Canon) which is impressive since the G15 could only manage 2fps burst (which is dead slow). HD video is also beefed up to 1080 60p (from 30p).
Canon Powershot G16 should be available in October and priced around $550.
Canon PowerShot S120
Canon PowerShot S120 got similar updates just like the G16: DIGIC 6 processor, claimed 50% increase in AF speed, 1080 60p video recording and 12fps (drops to 9.3fps) photo burst mode. The lens also got updated and now has a slightly faster aperture; F/1.8-5.7 compared to F/2-5.9 in preceding Powershot S110. You can read a detailed review of both G15 and S110 on my blog which can give yo in insight how the new cameras might perform.
Canon Powershot S120 will also ship in October for a recommended price of $450.
Canon PowerShot SX510 HS
Canon PowerShot SX510 HS is an upgraded version of SX500 IS (read my Canon SX500 IS review here). The lens on the new SX510 HS appears to be the same 24-720mm, but the sensor got a very important upgrade. Old model used 16MP CCD unit which didn’t perform particularly good, but the new SX510 HS uses 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, probably the same one used in SX270 and SX280 which performs very well (my review here). Video is also upgraded and now records 1080 24p video footage.
It goes for sale in September for $250.
Canon PowerShot SX170 IS
Canon PowerShot SX170 IS is the new basic compact ultra zoom model replacing SX160. It has the same lens and 16MP CCD sensor but got an upgrade from AA to Li-Ion battery.
It goes for sale in September for $180.
Canon EF-S 55-250 F/4-5.6 IS STM telephoto lens
Canon EF-S 55-250 F/4-5.6 IS STM is an upgraded version of 55-250 lens. The only difference is related to auto focus motor which now uses STM (stepping motor) technology. Main advantage of STM can be seen in video recording when the lens focuses silently and without sudden focus changes. Also, the new version has internal focusing (the lens does not extended when focusing).
It will be available in September for $350.
